Nya Nya Dance is a series of dance videos featuring various cartoon and furry characters bending over from one side to another while following the rhythm of trance music in the background. Occasionally, flashing lights and colors are used to give the videos a nightclub-like effect.

Origin

The original “Nya Nya Dance” video was uploaded by YouTuber Webkinzlid^[1] on July 24th, 2009. A self-described “girl furry,” Webkinzlid also had a DeviantART^[2] profile where she hosted her artworks before it was permanently banned from the site.

The video shows a character dancing side to side, set to DJ Diskant’s remix version^[3] of “New Day” by Wazari^[4]. The name “Nya Nya dance” comes from the girly vocal track constantly singing “nya” in the background:

Initially, a small part of the YouTube community responded to the video with their own versions, such as the very first response video soberly titled “Re: Nya Nya Dance.”

While Webkinzlid’s video gained a moderate figure of 70,000 views since its YouTube debut in 2009, it has led to the creation of more than 1,300 derivative videos^[5] and earned several honors as one of the most responded videos in the Film & Animation category:
