About

The Rocket Propelled Chainsaw (a.k.a Rocket Chainsaw or its registration name : RPC M1B) is a fictional weapon that gained legendary status as one of the most advanced and awesome lethal piece of equipment ever conceived by the internet, with maximum efficiency against zombie creatures.

Origin

On December the 24th 2005, Militaryphotos.net user (and artist, as the following photobucket album shows) Sergey31 created a thread entitled Rocket Propelled Chainsaw (in action).. in which he exposed a small comic strip he made following an idea by someone named Mr. Skorotsnoy.

The first panel shows diagram representing a side view of a new concept of weaponry : The Rocket Propelled Chainsaw, labeled RPC M1B. The rest of the comic depicts its usage in a warzone, “Somewhere in Chechnya”, supposedly against the Talibans.

From that comic, two peculiar images would stand out:

Spread

The fictional blueprint from the weapon would first be featured on Herogames.com forums in October 2006, leading to 6 pages of comments, then on mopo.ca around November 2006, without getting as much attention there.
However, the picture was picked in February 2007 by CollegeHumor’s user Greg and featured on the CollegeHumor website. While there is no trace anymore of that upload there, the initial MilitaryPhoto.com thread as well as a query search on CollegeHumor indicate that it existed as the Rocket Propelled Chainsaw. Clearly the only way to defeat a bear that has sharks for arms. cathphrase for some time, before being removed.

By October 2007, the concept spread to Facepunch, where an user did a 3D rendition of the weapon. Sergey31 himself would link to it in the active MilitaryPhotos thread. Unfortunately, the Facepunch link doesn’t seem to work anymore. There would be a followup version in the beginning of 2008.

By the end of 2008, the weapon would have its own Uncyclopedia article and would also rank #15 in the Uncyclopedia list of weapons that shoot other weapons that don’t exist, but should. It would have its own Urban Dictionary entry in October as well.

By 2009, the schematic would be reused as a roleplay game item for the Savage After World blog. It would also be reused as a real life concert poster by LiveJournal user gainesvillegoth and have several Facebook groups as well.

By 2010, multiple blogs would feature the weapon as the most efficient way to slice through a zombie apocalypse :
