About
The “!1” Phenomenon is a well known but little documented event occurring in internet text. It’s characterized by a poster who either accidentally or purposefully adds ones after a string of exclamation points.
Origin and Usage
To use the exclamation point on most keyboards the shift key must be pressed while the “1” is held. It is a common mistake to lift the shift key while the “1” is still being pressed.
When done on purpose, it is usually to poke fun at those who unintentionally make this mistake, or simply to incite rage, thereby being a useful tool for trolling. When done by accident, it’s usually when one is too hasty and takes his finger off the shift button before the string of exclamation points is completed. It is also sarcastically spelled out as an error, as evidenced below.
Examples
“Omfg you noob!!!!111”
“Baseball sux!!11”
“LOL awesome!!!111one11eleven”
Taken from Urban Dictionary:
“1. !1
Common typo among people who like to insert many exclamation points to the end of a sentence, caused by accidentally releasing the Shift key before the 1 key, and sending the message without previewing it to realize the typo had been made.
Often used on purpose to make fun of such accidents and the people who make them, or as part of leetspeak.
A similar but less-joked-about occurrence is the tendency to insert backslashes after a string of question marks.
