About
Commando is an American action film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Around the middle of 2000s, this movie suddenly earned a cult following from many fanatics in 2Channel that is a massive anonymous BBS in Japan because of its very good Japanese translation adding spice to its B-movie taste. And Commando also became the subject of parodies and MADs on Nico Nico Douga (NND) that is a video sharing service in Japan, after it was launched in 2007.
Origin
Commando was directed by Mark L. Lester and was distributed by 20th Century Fox in 1985. Its hilarious one-liners and comical, or bad, acting are so much loved by B-movie freaks.[1] Of course, Japan is no exception.
In Japan, this movie has happened to be on the air on prime-time TV only every 2 years or so. Because of sublime performance by voice actors and good translation, the ridiculousness of this movie is also kept perfectly in there.
The most popular Japanese dubbed version for Commando was translated by Katsushige Hirata for TV broadcast in 1989, and it hadn’t been included to Commando’s videos/DVDs for a long time.
Spread
Popularity on 2Channel
The online popularity of Commando in Japan was first grown on “live-coverage” boards in 2Channel. These boards are for TV programs that 2Channel users are watching on realtime, and are famous for fast stream of user posts.
Commando began to raise its popularity on there at its broadcast in June 18th, 2004, and it had already become big fad in 2006. When Commando was on the air in March 5th, 2006, several 2Channel servers that were famous for its strongness crashed by heavy access and posts from 2Channel users, though they only posted their laughing at its ridiculousness in its every single scene. And Commando’s thread scored 1937 posts/min at the maximum speed, and got over 50,000 posts in total while being on the air in July 20th, 2007.
This extraordinary excitement for Commando in 2Channel was reported by Livedoor news, a news section in Livedoor that is a Japanese portal service, in 2008.[2]
The parodies and Shift-JIS arts by 2Channel users are listed on Commando wiki since 2008.[3]

Popularity on Nico Nico Douga
After Nico Nico Douga was launched in 2007, Commando’s hilarious quotes and scenes also became the subject of MAD videos. The more new popular music resources come, the more Commando MADs are posted to there. The most popular resource for these parodies is Bennett’s foolish countenance on the last battle.

This scene is frequently cited to MADs and parody illustrations.
However, the amount of Commando MADs changes repeatedly because these are very often deleted by copyright holders.
As of May 2011, the amount of MADs related to Commando is over 300,[4] and many of them are uploaded to YouTube.[5]
This fad is described in Nico Nido Pedia, an internet encyclopedia in NND.[6]

Reaction by the Official
20th Century Fox released Commando’s DVD including Japanese dubbed version for the first time in May 2009, and its version was Katsushige Hirata’s one that was loved by many 2Channel and NND users. It can be easily imagined that this enthusiastic popularity on the internet affected to their product development plan.
Its customer reviews on Amazon are filled with parodies imitating quotes in Commando.[11][12]
